This is an original antique Japanese painting in ink, watercolor and silver leaf on paper. I didn’t realize how old it is until I showed it to my native born Japanese neighbor, who said that she can’t read the writing because it’s “ancient.”

The seated figure is wearing a very exaggerated style kimono and a kabuki mask. It is assumed that the figure is actually a male actor dressed in the voluminous kimono, wearing a female kabuki mask. The red kimono suggests that the role is one of a geisha.

The kimono is decorated with flowers and flowing water. The actor holds a fan and appears to read a letter or small book; a serving tray is nearby.

There are a couple of rectangles at the upper right on which are symbols suggesting a tea ceremony.

There is a red stamp at the upper left and Japanese calligraphy; a small stamp also appears at the lower left.

The overall size of the piece, including the reinforced edges is ~11 x 16″.

The substrate appears to be rice paper to which the (rice?) paper on which the painting was done, has been applied. The condition appears to be good, though the margins of the substrate have been reinforced with tape; it appears that a small chip to the edge of the margin was repaired, but the image is unaffected. The pricing reflects consideration for the minor repair to the margin.
