Minimalist Landscape
Artist’s Proof, Pencil Signed
This Untitled minimalist landscape by Listed Artist, Stephen (Steve) Francis Poleskie, is emblematic of his work between 1963 and 1968, when many of his original silkscreens were abstractions of landscapes and nature. In this piece, within an ~24” diameter circle, the abstraction of an island is distilled to a dark silhouette of land above a thin line of sand, the two dwarfed by a steely blue sky and an ocean of a virtually identical color.
He had founded Chiron Press in 1963 after moving to Manhattan and was both an artist and Master printer until he closed it in 1968 to join the Cornell University faculty in Ithaca. His original silkscreens from that period are today in the permanent collections of MOMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, Victoria and Albert Museum and The Tate Gallery in London, among others in the U.S. and abroad.
This piece features a distant landscape and horizon line within a circular space; in several respects it has elements common to his 1967 “Sea Target Tondo”, though this piece is much more subtle and universal in its appeal that the 1967 work. It is signed in pencil at lower right “Artist’s Proof v Poleskie”; since he was the Master Printer at Chiron Press, the artist himself hand made this Artist’s proof. The mat opening size IS ~ 24 x 24”.
Provenance: Originally part of the Coopers and Lybrand Art Collection at their then U.S. HQ at 1251 Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan, this is one of about 30 works on paper in custom teak wood frames which we purchased in ~ 1996. Coopers & Lybrand had a history of supporting the arts, particularly talented artists under age 35. The firm was at the time a worldwide accounting and consulting firm, which subsequently merged in 1998 with Price Waterhouse to form PricewaterhouseCoopers, the world’s largest professional services firm.
Condition: The work has no apparent condition problems. THE QUOTED PRICE IS FOR THE ART ITSELF AND DOES ***NOT *** INCLUDE THE VERY LARGE, HEAVY FRAME, AS IT WOULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO SHIP.
It has been difficult to value this piece, because in 2000, he destroyed many of his early works and withdrew many others from the market; fortunately, many museums, galleries, corporate and private collections had already acquired his landscapes, minimalist works and portraiture.
